acupuncture for longevity & healthy aging

Lifespan vs Healthspan

Modern medicine has drastically increased lifespan in most Western countries — but our physical health and enjoyment of life haven’t gone along for the ride.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history of cultivating longevity — with acupuncture, herbs, diet and lifestyle choices. In fact, fertility and longevity are closely intertwined as fertility tonics, nutrition and lifestyle are almost identical to those for longevity.

Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.

The Only Body You’ve Got

While there has been a recent increase in emphasis on maintaining physical fitness, particularly through exercise, this is only part of the story.

How you eat, how you sleep, your daily habits, and most importantly, your attitude and how you feel, all have an impact on longevity.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance affects far more than just blood sugar

Insulin is the hormone your body makes to move sugar (glucose) from your bloodstream into your cells to use as energy.

With insulin resistance, your cells stop responding to normal levels of insulin, forcing your body to produce more and more insulin to keep your blood sugar stable.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Increased cravings, especially for sweets and carbohydrates

  • Fatigue, particularly after meals

  • Weight gain around the abdomen

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Elevated blood sugar levels: fasting glucose or hemoglobin A1C, a marker of blood sugar over time

  • Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to regulate your blood sugar, leading to both high blood sugar and high insulin levels.

Insulin resistance also causes chronic inflammation.

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome, also called Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome (CKM), is a cluster of health conditions that tend to occur together — and significantly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

You are generally considered to have metabolic syndrome when you have at least 3 of the following:

  • Excess abdominal fat

  • High blood sugar

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol, specifically triglycerides

Insulin resistance, inflammation and chronic stress are the major underlying drivers of metabolic syndrome.

The Drivers of Modern Disease:

Insulin Resistance, Metabolic Syndrome & Inflammation

Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and inflammation are tightly linked — and each one activates and intensifies the others. These are the common underlying factors of most modern diseases associated with aging in the West. Together, we can turn that around.

Commonly Associated Conditions

Reversing the Process

Did you know that most of this is reversible, especially if you start early in the process? Western medicine tends to wait until a disease has been diagnosed to offer treatment. With a holistic, integrative approach we can catch these syndromes much earlier in their progression — and start to turn them around.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have a rich tradition of righting imbalances before they become entrenched. And the goal is always complete health and well-being — not just the absence of disease.
